Geeks and nerds are usually used interchangeably. It’s an honest mistake, the two subcultures are ridiculously similar and there is a lot of overlap. Geeks can be nerds and nerds can be geeks; very few people are entirely one or the other. However, there are a lot of differences that many people are not aware of– it’s surprising how often they get lumped together.
Geeks, though they are often upheld as a symbol of being outside of the norm and uncool, are actually more narrowly focused on technology and pop culture. Nerds, on the other hand, have more academic leanings. Geeks appear to have the ability to step out of their social bubble and have access to non-geeks, whereas nerds generally stay with their own and are happy that way.
Whether nerd or geek, it definitely can be said that an emphasis on intellect is a good thing– brains are in short supply these days, and any appreciation of knowledge is something to be appreciated.
