iPhone SAM unlock act now

All good things seem to come to an end…sometimes a bit too quickly than we’d like. Folks have been scrambling to unlock their jailbroken iPhones with the recently discovered Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) unlock, courtesy of a Chinese researcher by the name of Loktar_Sun. This method has been confirmed to work by jailbreaker, @MuscleNerd.

The method reportedly worked across any iPhone baseband and firmware – universal, you might say, if we neglect the part that  you’d need to jailbreak your iPhone in order to activate the unlock.

Just under a week of the surfacing of the new unlock, Apple is reportedly stepping up the security measures for the activation servers, which means that everyone that wants to take advantage of the unlock should backup their unlock tickets before it’s too late.

Apple’s already cracking down on the unlocks, what good does backing up do?

Here’s the thing, as @MuscleNerd points out, “The good news is that previous tickets gotten via SAM trick still work”. This means that once you get the SAM activation ticket backed up, you will be able to utilize the ticket for future updates as well – pretty much, as long as your iPhone is jailbroken, you could rest assured that your iPhone would stay unlocked as well.

MuscleNerd SAM Unlock for iPhone Update

Backing up your SAM unlock tickets

Backing up your SAM unlock ticket is simple, thanks to the latest update to the Redsn0w tool by the iPhone Dev Team. The latest version of Redsn0w, version 0.9.10b8, offers a one-click solution as opposed to the longer steps involved in the SAM unlock tutorial.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b8

Backing up the unlock ticket

  1. Open Redsn0w 0.9.10b8 and click on “Extras”, then “Even more”
  2. Connect the unlocked iPhone and click “Backup”
  3. Click “OK” at the popup menu and this will save the zip file to the Redsn0w directory.
** Important: Do not lose this zip file! Future versions of Redsn0w will probably use this zip file to preserve your unlock for future updates and more.

For latecomers that want to try out the SAM Unlock for the iPhone:

There is a chance that the window might still be open with Apple’s activation servers so if you act now, perhaps you might have a chance to get your iPhone unlocked.

Redmond Pie is a great resource for all your jailbreaking needs – here are great tutorials to get you started with jailbreaking your iPhone then unlocking with the SAM unlock.

  1. Jailbreak your phone using this tutorial.
**Warning, if you’re on iOS 5.1 the jailbreak is available only for non-A5 device users (that means no iPad 2 or new iPad, or iPhone 4S, sorry folks.)
**Another warning: iOS 5.1 jailbreak is currently semi-untethered jailbreak, which means that if you need to restart/turn off your phone for any reason, you would need to ‘kickstart’ the phone with your computer. With the semi-tether, you will only have limited functions enabled, such as phone and Safari.
  2. SAM Unlock using this tutorial.
