Domain Name Fails

Today’s Guest Post has been brought to you by Daily.co.uk who introduces several funny domain name mistakes to brighten up your day.

Anybody who has their own website will be aware of the importance of a domain name. Having a catchy and unique domain name can drive more attention towards your site but you could unintentionally make the domain name represent something different to your business.

Humour is one of the biggest sellers in any business and whilst quirky domain names can work well, unintentionally funny names can attract traffic from outside your target audience – as shown in these five examples:

Looks like: LesboCages.com

Should be: LesBocages.com

A website for a tree service offered in France, at first glance some internet users may expect to find a completely different ‘service’ waiting for them after a quick click on the mouse.

Looks like: ExpertSexChange.com

Should be: ExpertsExchange.com

An accidental double meaning could see some visit this comparison site in hope of some very different advice.

Looks like: OldManShaven.com

Should be: Oldmanshaven.com

Intended for older adults who would like to rent a cabin, this domain could lead to some ‘hairy’ situations caused by misdirected internet traffic.

Looks like: BiGalsOnline.com

Should be: BigAlsOnline.com

Used by animal enthusiasts to find everything from dog and cat food to bird cages and animal exercise equipment, a poorly chosen domain name could see this site attracting interest from a whole different clientele.

Looks like: GotAHoe.com

Should be: GoTahoe.com

For individuals looking for a holiday break to Lake Tahoe, (situated between California and Nevada for those who didn’t know) this website is a great resource. The website provides holidays, weddings and activities based around the lake, however, the domain really looks like they sell something completely different!  Perhaps this is why it now directs to Gotahoenorth.com?

Choosing domain names

Different people have the potential to interpret domain names differently, so it is important that you choose yours wisely. If you want to avoid making a costly mistake then it may be worth speaking to a domain name registrar who is not afraid to tell you that your chosen domain name may end up sounding a bit silly.

Of course, this doesn’t mean funny names have to be avoided at all costs and some sites have shot to success with strange or unusual domain names. Here are a few of them:

ComputerTester.com

Does the domain name sound helpful? Sure does, if you go the actual site though you’ll be terribly disappointed.

Archive.org/web/web.php

Ok so it’s not the catchiest domain name out there-but it is more commonly known as the Way Back Machine. Put any website into the search bar and it can show what the website looked like at various points where Google cached it.

wwwdotcom.com

Just plain confusing, this domain matches the quirky and somewhat pointless function of the website itself. Rather than offering a service or product, the site merely proclaims to be the end of the internet and with such an indecipherable web name, it’s hard not to believe them.

futureme.org

Ever wanted to talk to yourself in the future and realise how stupid/smart you sounded when you were younger? Well with futureme.org you can send yourself that message that it’s 2012, you’re sitting in your pants eating Fritos..
